Joseph Bowie meets the Saskia Laroo Band
on Opening Night Amsterdam Dance Event
Paradiso Wed October 15: 21.30

The 'Opening Night' of the internationally renowned Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) on October 15 features a unique conjoined act in Paradiso of funk legend Joseph Bowie with The Saskia Laroo Band. The fact that the ADE is indeed a DJ event makes this concert especially noteworthy. The renowned New York trombonist Joseph Bowie made his mark as Mr. Defunkt and scored notable hits in the seventies. Bowie's music, which infuses jazz, funk, fusion and punk, is a model for the DJ era. Thus, his appearance at the Buma-Stemra-organized Amsterdam Dance Event, is therefore more than appropriate.

The headline "Joseph Bowie meets the Saskia Laroo Band” pairs Mr. Defunkt with Amsterdam's own jazz trumpet diva Saskia Laroo on October 15 in the small hall of Paradiso. Saskia Laroo brings her upbeat band with which she performed in Zimbabwe with great success during the Harare International Festival of the Arts. A series of performances in that African country led to the release of the DVD 'Live in Zimbabwe. " By way of many requests a CD of the main concert will also be launched on the ADE Opening Night

Joseph Bowie (Joe Bowie for friends) is best known as a bandleader of Defunkt, a punk-funk-jazz band formed in New York City in 1978. It was the first band to mix popular music with other, more extreme musical genres, resulting in performances at both jazz festivals and in rock venues.
He is the brother of the avant-garde jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie and saxophonist Byron Bowie, and first studied piano and congas, but later switched to the trombone. As a boy he played with the famous bluesman Albert King. Bowie has lived since 2003 in the Netherlands.

Bowie has great admiration for Saskia Laroo, who in America is touted as 'Lady Miles Davis of Europe'. That admiration is mutual; it's as if they were always on the same musical boat. Saskia Laroo creates new styles, which she describes as "nu jazz" or "swingin 'body music'. She convincingly combines different musical genres such as jazz, pop, dance and world—her own provocative mix. Saskia lives mostly in the Netherlands and America.

The concert in Paradiso on October 15 starts at 21:30 and goes until 23:00. DJ prior to and after the concert is Dansor, the internationally renowned Hungarian spin artist, who also has her own record label. The entrance fee is € 10, -.
